This monotype workshop will be very basic. Working with tools and supplies that are easy at hand, I started doing monotypes in my kitchen! This workshop will teach you the basics about this printmaking process considered the most painterly.

This first session will focus on the subtractive method of monotype. By coating the plexi-glas plate with pigment, you will be able to lift out (subtractive or “taking away”) the image you want and manipulate values and details with Q-tips, kleenex, brushes, your fingers, and many other kinds of tools. The image is then “printed” to a damp piece of paper with a tube of PVC as your press!

Discussion about paper, paints, and printing techniques will take up a good portion of the time before and during printing.

From here, we will discuss the additive process of monotype which will be covered in a second workshop.

Definitely bring an apron and a willingness to get immersed into printmaking!
