Guest Blog Post: Mommy by the River
During the first four years of my son’s life, we were regular fixtures at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin. We were there so often that I now know the security guards, the maintenance team, the volunteers and many of the employees on a first name basis. But like most new moms, I pretty much lived in what I call, “The Mommy blur.” When you have a toddler at a library, there is no time to look at a magazine, a book or anything for that matter because well, your kid may simply run off.
And that is the reason why I barely noticed a very important brochure about getting FREE books sitting in a stack on the desk in the KidSpace section of the library. KidSpace is the official name for the section on the ground floor of the Gail Borden Public Library that serves preschool age kids with a play area, toys, crafts, puzzles, a little play kitchen, computers and tons more. But I have always affectionately called it the “little kids area where they have the play structure.”
So, this brochure that I was speaking of has a picture of Dolly Parton on a train. How was I to know that the Dolly Parton brochure is all about how to get five years worth of FREE books for my kid? It would be really helpful to us moms if the words, “FREE BOOKS FOR YOUR KIDS” were on the front, don’t you think? And when I say five years worth I mean, literally, about 55 books if you sign your child up at birth. What’s not to like about that?
