Chief Schmidt selected into 2017 Fire Service Executive Development Institute Participants


The International Association of Fire Chiefs [] (IAFC) announced that Fire Chief David Schmidt of the Elgin Fire Department has been accepted into the fifth year of the Fire Service Executive Development Institute (FSEDI).  David Schmidt competed with new fire chiefs and chief officers from across the country and Canada to become a member of the 2017 cohort program. Along with being accepted into the program Chief Schmidt has been awarded a scholarship which covers the expenses for attending the program.

Chief Schmidt joined the Elgin Fire Department in 1989.  He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2000, Captain in 2005, Assistant Chief of Operations in 2011, and Fire Chief in 2016.  Chief Schmidt has completed his Executive Fire Officer certification through the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD and received Chief Fire Officer Certification through the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal.  He is working on completing his Chief Fire Officer certification from the Center for Public Safety Excellence.  Schmidt has completed training at the University of Virginia’s Senior Executive Institute.  He has a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science from Southern Illinois University.

Once Again Motorola Solutions Foundation has provided the IAFC with a grant to fund the program. “Motorola Solutions Foundation recognizes the how these challenging times require a new breed of leader to head our local fire departments and national fire service”, said Matt Blakely, Executive Director of Motorola Solutions Foundation. “We’re proud to help support the education of these leaders to ensure they have the skills necessary to meet these complex and emerging issues confronting our communities.”

The Fire Service Executive Development Institute is a year-long leadership-development program created and implemented by the IAFC to provide new and aspiring chiefs with the tools they need to have successful and productive tenures.  The members of the cohort will meet in March, 2017 for their first 6-day session in addition to 2 other sessions six months apart.  The group will communicate between sessions using an online community.
