Step back in time and explore a true architectural gem: the Muirhead Farmhouse. Designed in 1950 by the legendary Frank Lloyd Wright, this 3,200-square-foot farmhouse is the only one known to be both designed and built by Wright himself in his signature Usonian style during his lifetime. The home is open for tours on select dates each month from April through October. More than just a historic farmhouse, the 1,011 acres surrounding the Muirhead Farmhouse, called Muirhead Springs Preserve, is now under restoration by the Kane County Forest Preserve and offers a scenic escape for nature lovers. This ongoing project is transforming the land back to its natural state, filled with native prairie wildflowers and grasses. Walkers, bikers, and even horseback riders can explore the beauty of the preserve on a 4-mile limestone trail loop.
Muirhead Farmhouse is participating in Explore Elgin Area’s Stick and Stay Trail to celebrate serving the Elgin area for 40 years. This program allows you to win prizes when you collect 12 stickers from one of the 24 destinations participating in the program. Collect these stickers in person or digitally when you visit the attractions and submit them to the Explore Elgin Area Visitors Center to redeem your prize (as long as supplies last).
