5 Ways to Celebrate Mardi Gras in 2020
Did you know Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday is also referred to as Pancake Tuesday? Why Pancakes? Apparently, making pancakes became a customary ritual for Mardi Gras because it encouraged people to use up certain foods before fasting. Milk, sugar, eggs and all kinds of delectable toppings traditionally are not eaten during the fasting season and conveniently can all be used to make pancakes. Don’t get us wrong – pancakes are delicious, but we compiled a list of Mardi Gras themed activities that can ONLY be done in the Elgin area.
Here’s a list of 5 ways you can celebrate Mardi Gras in the Elgin area this year.
1. Get Paczkis from Herb’s Bakery
1020 Larkin Ave, Elgin
Herb’s Bakery in Elgin is famous for their Paczkis. In fact they have a history of selling out. Previously they have referred to it as Herb’s Bakery’s “Black Friday.” Treats like this don’t get famous for selling out unless they are drop dead delicious. Flavors include raspberry or lemon preserve filled & finished with granulated sugar. As well as, blueberry preserve or cheese filled & finished with powdered sugar. There’s also apricot or strawberry preserve filled & finished with a white glaze. And custard filled & finished with either white or chocolate icing. Order ahead of time because these delights will go fast.
2. Dine New Orleans Style at Elgin Public House
219 E Chicago St, Elgin
Themed food and drinks along with specials running for the length of the day is what you can expect at Elgin Public House this Mardi Gras. There too many specialty dishes to name, there’s Po Boys, Corn Chowder Soup, Lobster Mac n Cheese and many more New Orleans style options to choose from. Come on in a celebrate Mardi Gras with a southern meal you won’t forget!
3. Get Pumped at Mardi Gras Zumba
1 West State St, South Elgin
Join Lisa on the 25th from 6:30pm-7:30pm for a Mardi Gras themed Zumba workout! Feel free to bring your mask and there will be chances to earn some beads! There will also be a raffle for punch card holders. No registration is required, drop ins and first time freebies are welcome to join.
4. Head to the Dog-Friendly Party at Dogtopia
580 Randall Road, South Elgin
Dogs wanna have fun too! Why not let them? Dogtopia, located in South Elgin is an open-play facility and daycare for pups on any day. Let your furry best friends run wild and play with other dogs this Mardi Gras. Not to mention that Dogtopia also offers grooming and spa treatments. Don’t forget to check out their Facebook page for weekly deals.
5. Chow Down on Beignets at Sweet Berry Cafe
720 N McLean Blvd, South Elgin
These delicious fritters are one of Sweet Berry Cafe’s hot ticket items, highlighted on the first page of their menu. At Sweet Berry Cafe you can expect to get these freshly rolled treats drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce before being sprinkled with powered sugar. These beignets can also be brought out in groups of 3, 6 or 12. From treating just yourself or treating the whole family. Remember these treats are only available Monday through Saturday until 11am.
