Elgin Mental Health Center – Medical & Surgical Building
The Elgin Mental Health Center
Medical & Surgical Building
Designed in 1965, and completed in 1967, was the first of architect Bertram Goldberg’s hospitals. (Goldberg also designed the Marina City towers in Chicago.)
The circular drum shaped building, comprised of four floors housing 167 beds, has external louvers that functioned as sun shades but also provided a sense of security.
