Friends of the Fox River’s Dam Nite Out – tour of Carpentersville’s New Shoreline

August 19 @ 6:00 pm

Join the Friends of the Fox River for a tour of the land that was submerged by the dam.

The Carpenter Dam was built in 1837 and served as a crucial producer of mechanical power for local economic development. In addition, it created a source of ice, electricity, and recreation. That source has long been replaced. You will be amazed at what is now in its place.

The dam was removed in October, and the self-restoration process has been interesting. Many artifacts have been exposed. The mud flats have been replaced by sandy soils, and the resulting vegetation is surprisingly robust. Come and see the changes and over 30 different species that have been identified and join guest naturalists on hikes to explore the new shoreline’s natural and cultural surprises.

If you plan to join the hikes, please dress appropriately. Some hike options will be short and along the shore, while others will be longer (20-40 minutes) and venture through tall vegetation.
