Indigenous Peoples Observation Day at Elgin Public Museum
October 5 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
Start this day of respect and appreciation for Native American Indigenous cultures at 11 a.m. at the zoo, where we will talk about the importance of the bison to Native Americans and introduce those who haven’t yet met “the new kid” to both Takoda and yearling bison Buffy.
At about 11:25, we will read our Land Acknowledgement Statement.
At 11:30, Joseph Standing Bear will perform a bison blessing ceremony. There is no charge for these outdoor presentations of the day.
The museum is open from 12-4, and throughout the afternoon there will be Native American information stations, at some of which you can try out Native American replica tools; and archaeologist Ken Geier will demonstrate the amazing Native American art of flintknapping — how projectile points and arrowheads were made.
From 1:00-2:00 p.m., Abaigael Collins will perform Jingle Dress and Shawl dances.
Standard admission applies for indoor museum presentations ($3 adults, $2 kids 3-12 and Seniors 60+, and free for under 3, Museum members, and Elgin Township Senior Access Passes.
