Laura Davidson Sears Art Gallery at the Elgin Academy

Learn about the historical and cultural significance of this beautiful and important building now celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Adult program.

Elgin Academy opened the magnificent Greek Temple-inspired art gallery for all of Elgin in 1924. It operated as a public art museum, art gallery, performance venue and cultural center of the arts for both students of the Academy and the community.

Presented by Ann Chipman, the daughter of Dean Chipman, Director of the Sears Art Gallery at Elgin Academy for 23 years from 1940 to 1963. She has documented the story of the art gallery, specifically focusing on the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s. Ann is a retired adult educator and education consultant. She is also an alumna of Elgin Academy.
