Tour the Nancy Kimball Cobblestone at 302 West Chicago St. in Elgin and view the latest upgrades to the 1846 building. The new furnace and radiant heat are installed. Plumbing and electric are roughed in. The south facade is finished! Enjoy hot cider, and donuts while you learn about the work that has been done and what is left on the punchlist. There will also be special awards for contractors and volunteers.
The Illinois State Archaeological Survey excavated the cistern at the Nancy Kimball Cobblestone House in March 2018. The archaeologists found a number of interesting items. Interesting items include early manufactured shell buttons, a complete Elgin Eagle Brewery bottle, container glass and ceramic sheets. Hardware pieces and animal bones were also found. The cistern items will be on exhibit at the Cobblestone Construction Celebration.
Renovations are expected to be completed by 2020 and the space will be used as a community education space for nearby schools as well as adult learners, a gallery to feature local history, and a meeting/office space.
