Hometown Heroes: Gail Borden Public Library
Books, exhibits and learning have always been provided by the Gail Borden Public Library. You may not have known, but this Elgin library is the third largest in the state of Illinois. For years, the library has been providing people with many educational opportunities. And after temporarily closing for safety reasons, they have continued to provide those opportunities virtually.
Gail Borden Public Library has always considered the education of youth a priority. With an entire wing dedicated to children’s learning and education, you would assume their closing would stop them. But no! They continue to connect with the children in the community virtually. And while going digital is not easy, they have been very successful in their goals to reach children at home. Online you can find videos of readings of children’s books and activity ideas to keep kids entertained while at home.
They have also continued to provide support for the adults in our community as well. Since closing, the library has started a program called “Your Library at Home”. Each day a schedule is posted with a list of online programming and when to tune in. This programming is geared to both children and adults and has featured bilingual story times, How-To projects, and many reading suggestions.
Gail Borden Public Library has an extensive online presence. Their website is full of information and resources- we recommend checking it out!
Here’s a quick list of online resources available through the Gail Borden website.

- eBooks and audio books
- free music downloads

Gail Borden Public Library has continued to be a wonderful educational resource for the Elgin area community. Transforming their temporary closing as a small road bump and continuing to keep education, and support at the forefront.
