Start your journey right off the historic Route 20 in Hampshire at the Muirhead Farmhouse. This Frank Lloyd Wright- designed Usonian home is a masterpiece of organic architecture and the perfect first look at the area’s structural soul. Descendants of the original family still live in this home and offer scheduled public tours. Head east to the Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin. Step back in time with a ride on a vintage electric trolley, a moving piece of Illinois transit history. This is also a great place to learn how railroads have shaped the region, Chicagoland, and even the country.

To truly understand a region’s story, take time to learn the history of each community. Start your deep dive by traveling north to visit the Dundee Township Historical Society. Explore the local lore of the river towns before heading into the urban center of Elgin.

Next, explore the museums that tell Elgin’s story. Start at the Elgin Public Museum, located in Lords Park, featuring natural history in a classic Neoclassical setting. Then venture to the Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 Museum, a beautifully restored 1903 firehouse highlighting the profession’s history. Finish at the Elgin History Museum, housed in a landmark 1856 Greek Revival- style building originally used as a private school. There you can learn about the industries and natural resources that shaped Elgin and some of the surrounding region.

Spend your late afternoon in the Gifford Park Historic District. Follow the Self- Guided Walking Tour to admire the cobblestone craftsmanship and colorful Victorian homes known as Painted Ladies, signatures of Elgin’s architectural heritage. If you will be visiting during September, we recommend checking out the Historic Elgin House Tour. Elgin residents open their homes for a one-of-a-kind experience to learn the history of their homes. The homes and neighborhoods spotlighted each year change, so event attendees can come every year and learn about new homes.

Another great walking tour available is the Elgin Public Arts Self-Guided Walking Tour, which helps you navigate all of the art pieces throughout downtown. Don’t miss the vibrant murals, sculptures, and utility box covers that turn Elgin’s infrastructure into an outdoor gallery, reflecting the city’s modern diversity and creative spirit. Take a quick trip to East Dundee to see their public art.

Conclude your trip at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir. This stunning, hand-carved marble temple is a breathtaking example of traditional Indian architecture and a must-see cultural landmark.
