Day 1

Morning

Start your morning at Jelke Creek Bird Sanctuary in Sleepy Hollow. With its restored prairies and wetlands, it’s the perfect quiet spot for early-morning birdwatching and a peaceful stroll through the tallgrass. Just minutes away, you can continue your peaceful morning exploration at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center. This is the ultimate example of Elgin’s “city-to-nature” magic. One minute you’re on a city street; the next, you’re lost in 67 acres of woods, ponds, and sedge meadows. Explore the wheelchair-accessible pond trail or hike the wood-chipped paths through the trees.

Day 1

Afternoon

Cool off for the afternoon on the water. Launch your kayak or canoe onto the Fabulous Fox! Water Trail. This designated national water trail offers stunning views of the valley that can only be enjoyed from the water. If you prefer keeping your feet on land, hop on the Fox River Bike Trail. This paved artery connects the entire region. Ride south from the Carpentersville through East Dundee and West Dundee into downtown Elgin and then on to South Elgin. You are sure to spot the water birds and lots of nature along the trail.

If it’s a warm day, head to the Festival Park Zero-Depth Fountain. It’s the perfect, free way for the kids to cool off while you enjoy the river views. Whenever you are exploring the Fox River, we recommend stopping at the Gail Borden Public Library. Whether you want to stop in to cool off from a long bike ride or check out the latest exhibit, it will instantly become clear why this is a must-stop in the Elgin Area. The main branch is along the Fox River in downtown Elgin and offers great views year-round, including bald eagle sightings in the winter months.

Venture off the trail by car for a stop at Bluff Springs Fen. This is a globally significant ecosystem where mineral- rich groundwater seeps to the surface, supporting rare plants you won’t findanywhere else in Illinois. It’s a quiet, prehistoric-feeling oasis tucked behind a historic cemetery.

Head to your Elgin Area hotel to drop your gear and refresh before catching a tranquil sunset in one of our favorite spots.

Day 2

Morning

Enjoy nature by spending a morning exploring some of the area golf courses. Whether you want the challenge of an award-winning golf course or the laid-back pace of a municipally owned 9 hole, the Elgin Area has a course worth exploring. A full list of golf courses can be found at GolfElgin.com.

Cap off your trip at the Bartlett Nature Center. Explore their interactive learning stations or take one last hike through the surrounding woodland trails of the James “Pate” Philip State Park before hitting the road to head home. This expansive open space offers wide-open prairie views and a network of gravel trails perfect for a long, sunset walk.
