Press Release: Congresswoman Duckworth Meets with Local Travel Leaders on the Impact of Tourism

Illinois Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth heard from travel advocates and businesses directly and indirectly impacted by travel at a roundtable event today in Elgin at the Grand Victoria Casino, designed to draw attention to the importance of travel to the Illinois economy.

Congresswoman Duckworth was joined at the event by travel advocates representing the Elgin Area Convention &Visitors Bureau, Elgin Mayor Dave Kaptain, Illinois State photo (17)Tourism Director Jen Hoelzle, local business owners and area attractions. The meeting highlighted policies the state’s Congressional delegation can support in Washington to encourage travel, welcome more visitors, and generate economic activity at the local level.

“Elgin attracts people from all over the state,” Duckworth said.  “Last year Illinois had 101 million visitors. These tourists brought in $34.6 billion dollars and 301,100 jobs directly related to tourism. I hope this year we surpass those numbers and continue to watch this region grow and succeed.”

America’s travel industry has been critical to fueling our nation’s economic recovery. Job gains in the travel sector have outpaced other areas of the economy. 1 out of 9 jobs in the U.S. depend on travel and tourism and travel is among the top 10 industries in 49 states and D.C. in terms of employment, according to the U.S. Travel Association. Here in Kane County, travel expenditures in 2013 represented over $435 million making us the 5th largest county in Illinois for travel expenditures and representing over 4,000 jobs. Increasing travel to the United States is one of the most effective forms of economic stimulus—injecting billions into the U.S. economy and creating thousands of new jobs here at home.

“The roundtable today was an effort to develop and build champions in Congress for the travel industry and its employees in their states and districts.  The event highlighted stories of local travel leaders and offered an opportunity for participants to share their thoughts on sustaining and growing this vital industry for the Elgin Area and Illinois”, stated Kimberly Bless, President and CEO for the Elgin Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Today’s roundtable was hosted by the Elgin Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (EACVB). Our primary objective is to encourage, foster, promote and stimulate travel and tourism in Chicagoland’s Northern Fox River Valley.
