Staying in the Area Couldn’t Be More Fun
I know it’s still winter, and we’re looking to see spring soon…at least we’re trying to be optimistic with the 40 degree weather. Even though you may have the winter blues, I had fun this past week visiting places in this area like a tourist.
My friend was visiting from Georgia so I took her to some local places to have fun, relax, and dine.
To start off, we headed to Alexander’s Cafe in Elgin. I wanted to show her the newly transformed space that now includes a great, casual atmosphere. We ended up staying for a couple of hours and talking, because it was so laid back and the servers were very friendly. We both had classic dishes – Meatloaf and Chicken Alfredo. Those comfort foods were just what we wanted. I was full after the first hour from just eating the Chicken Alfredo. However, after letting our main course settle, we decided to split a dessert. You all know I love dessert and definitely Alexander’s desserts at that – so we tried the Chocolate Fudge cake. It was amazing. My friend also tried a turtle mocha while we were there and it ended up being a great pairing to dessert.
The next day, my friend wanted to play in the snow since she lives in Georgia where she doesn’t see snow at all. Another friend of ours recommended sledding and playing in the snow at Randall Oaks Park in West Dundee, so we decided that would be our destination for the day. I hadn’t played in the snow since last winter, so I wasn’t sure what we were getting ourselves into. But we ended up having a blast. The park has numerous small hills that lead up to a big one in the middle of the park. We tried sledding down the small hills first to get the hang of it, and then went for the big one. I forgot how much fun it was to just enjoy the snow instead of wishing it away. We also tried to build a snowman, but it ended up being a short one with acorn eyes, tree limbs for arms, and leaves for hair. Nevertheless, we were exhausted by the end, but we definitely had fun.
The next day we wanted to try something else, maybe a drinking spot in the area. So I recommended Sweet Pop Fizz Candy Bar in East Dundee. I’ve heard great things about the wine, chocolate, and creative flavors of popcorn. My friend was sold from the minute I said wine and chocolate. We split a white wine and I had their House Blend popcorn which was caramel popcorn dipped in dark chocolate, raspberries, and coconut. It was definitely sweet and crunchy. She tried a chocolate chip stuffed cannoli with chocolate sauce drizzled on top and loved it. If she lived in the area, we would probably go every weekend. The service was friendly and very helpful when we weren’t sure what to try.
My point is that you can have fun in this area. You don’t have to travel too far to find great places to make memories with your friends. Try a couple of days with what I planned, or make your own adventure – either way adventure is out there.
