The Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra (EYSO), an In-Residence Ensemble in the Arts Center at Elgin Community College, is home to five orchestras, a brass choir, a percussion ensemble and a thriving Chamber Music Institute (CMI) with 350 students from over 60 communities. Founded in 1976, the mission of the EYSO is to create a community of young musicians, enriching their lives and the lives of their families, schools, communities and beyond, through the study and performance of excellent music. Musicians work and study under Artistic Director Randal Swiggum who celebrated his 16th year with the organization this past season. The EYSO is partially supported by grants from the EFS Foundation, the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission, the Grand Victoria Foundation, the Illinois Arts Council (a state agency), and the Palmer Foundation.

Drink craft beer in West Dundee's skyscraper from the 1800's. Emmett's Brewing Co. is a great local spot for lunch, dinner or just stop in for a beer or two.

There is outdoor seating during warm weather. Event space is located on the upper floor for meetings, wedding rehearsals and birthday parties.

Every year Emmett's Brewing Co. in West Dundee plans the Annual Big Wheel Race . The race draws over 100 racers and more than 2,000 racers.

In 1990, a small group of individuals met to discuss the future of Elgin's last Fire Barn, built in 1903, which was scheduled to be taken out of service.  It seemed that the logical solution was to use the Fire Barn to house the city's collection of fire-related memorabilia.  This solution would allow the building to be viewed, as well as the collection, which had been stored in the basement storeroom of Fire Station 1.

By August of 1991, the group had been successful in obtaining national recognition for the building by having it placed on the National Register of Historic Places.  A short time later it became the second official City of Elgin Landmark.  By fall of 1991 the Museum Board had incorporated and by-laws, as well as a museum policy had been adopted.  The main focus of the group had shifted from saving the Fire Barn to organizing into a viable museum.  The Board has taken on the role of administrator and operator of the Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 Museum.

The board is representative of the grass-roots support that began over 20 years ago.  With the onset of Corporate fundraising it is the hope that the enthusiasm will be contagious and the Fire Barn No. 5 Museum will thrive.
